Whether you are coaching a baseball team or helping young professionals to get further in their careers, you will still need these 7 effective ways that can make your coaching programs more powerful and more effective:
1. Know the skill levels of your participants. You don't want to teach these people something that they already know -- it's just a waste of time and energy. Before you draft your coaching programs, know the exact needs and demands of your target market so you can easily make your content more targeted and focused.
2. Set up realistic expectations. I got a call from a potential client few days ago asking me if there's any way I can teach him the basic of internet marketing in less than 4 hours -- that's all the time he can spend due to his busy schedule. I could have said yes and earn easy money in the process but I didn't want to put my credibility at stake. Of course I don't want somebody telling other people that I failed to delivered.
3. Do not "demotivate" your coach. Guard your actions especially if you are feeling frustrated. Sometimes non verbal communication and gestures can send the wrong message to our trainee.
4. Avoid using negative words. Phrases like "You shouldn't have", "I told you so", "I don't think", etc. can put your trainees into defensive mode. If you want these people to do their best, use encouraging statements like "I think it would be better if", "another great option would be", etc.
5. Keep it simple and brief. Take that extra mile to make your coaching programs much easier to understand. You may use images or illustrations to help your trainee visualize your thoughts and ideas and use simple terms that can be understood even by a fifth grader. Also, avoid beating around the bush and just get straight to the point to save your clients some time.
6. Get in the mood. Do not even think about coaching others when you feel frustrated or angry as this can affect not only the quality of your teaching but also your personal relationship with your clients.
7. Practice active listening. You must not only listen to what the client is saying but you must also understand the message that this person is not saying so you can easily understand where he is really coming from.
